FISHING AREA DESCRIPTION

Mehamn fishing village is situated 350 kilometers north west from the Russian border, at the shoreline of the legendary Barents sea. Because of the enormous area with few professional fishermen, the coast near fishing grounds is not so much in use.
Just a few local fishermen set their long lines for catfish, cod and naturally halibut.
The possibilities to get a real trophy on your lure are really great.
Vidar the Viking, your host, is born in Mehamn and know the area as his home pocket. He is also fishing and can give tips and positions where and how to fish.
The sea near Mehamn is shallow water with depths from 30 to 140 metres. Many excellent grounds for cat fish is in reach of a few boating minutes.

A lot of young fish of Pollock and haddock are good feed for the huge Cods and the king of the Barents Sea the halibut.

FISHING INFORMATION

The Red Fish grounds is more far away from the coast, half an hour boating. Cusk, different arts of flunder, and Pollock you will find almost everywhere along the coast.
From depths of 200 meters and more you will have the chances to catch the spotted catfish.
This demands rods above 30 lbs and reel with capacity of at least 600 metres with strength more than 25 kg. Here you should not risk using weak equipment as the chances to get a real trophy absolutely are present. In the main luggage you should always bring heavy equipment because so far north you never go with just 50%.
From beginning of may the weather situation is more and more stabile and the arts of Cod, Catfish and Halibut is the main goals. From the end of July comes the bigger pollocks and an exciting hunting in the more shallow seawater begins.
Never forget the shallow water zones. Often the bigger Cods are staying just under the smaller fish crops often in depths of just 20 metres.

Try your luck in these situations with Twisters and rubber fish with hook number 12/0.

Equipment tips:
See the photos and then you understand why we advice you to fish with heavy equipment. A real 50lbs rod with a good multi reel with minimum 600 metres good quality 0,30 mm dyneema if you want to win the fights against the giants of these waters.
Specially in May, June and July we have a lot of small heerings. The big Cod is coming up almost in the surface. Use for this rubberfish of 15 to 20 cm.
The hooks should be of size 10/0 – 12/0

GENERAL INFORMATION

The fishing area outside Mehamn is huge. Pay attention to the advices of the local guides at The Adventure Camp Mehamn. Then you save a lot of time for searching.
Not far from the camp there is some gravel grounds where there is good conditions for catfish.
Tease the catfish with a natural bait tackle. If the fish do not attack this try with a lighter lure with relative small treble hook. In front of this, attach a self smelling rubber octopus over the hook.
Move the pilk slowly with short movements over the ground, from time to time let the fish sink to the bottom. Often this is as effective as natural bait. Call us and we will explain.
Be careful not to use tackle with to many hooks, especially when the huge cods are present. 4-5 huge cods of 5 – 10 kilo could be to much even for the heaviest equipment.

Trailing Service:

If strong winds from north are making the sea uncomfortable we offer trailer service of your boat to the southern part of the peninsula where it is calm fjords. Fixed price.

King Crab Fishing:

If you are interested to fish for the giant delicious King Crabs, you can hire a Crab trap and go on your own to fish these new monsters of the Barents Sea that can be up to 8 kilo. Where and how we will explain you.

Salmon, Trout and Arctic Char:

Just a few kilometers from the camp you will find excellent rivers for salmon fishing and several inland lakes for trout and arctic char fishing. The fishing licences are low priced. Rent a car from the Adventure camp and go fishing!
